Agentic AI AI & Automation

India’s AI Registry for Agentic Payments & UPI

Agentic AI UPI

Imagine telling your AI:

“Buy my groceries when I’m running low.”

You don’t open a payment app. You don’t scan a QR code. You don’t approve every transaction.

Your AI agent does it for you.

This may sound futuristic, but agentic payments are moving closer to reality in India.

According to a September 10, 2026 Reuters report, India’s payments authority is building a registry to verify and monitor AI agents that make payments on behalf of users.

The move is linked to NPCI’s planned Unified Agentic Protocol, which could bring AI-powered payments to UPI.

What Are Agentic Payments?

Today, most digital payments need you to take action.

You choose what to buy, enter or approve the payment, and complete the transaction.

With agentic AI, the process could work differently.

You could give an AI agent a simple instruction:

  • “Buy groceries under ₹2,000.”
  • “Pay my electricity bill every month.”
  • “Buy these headphones if the price drops below ₹5,000.”

The AI agent can then monitor the situation and take action when the conditions are met.

In simple terms:

You set the goal. The AI handles the steps.

That’s what makes agentic AI different from a regular chatbot.

Why Is India Creating an AI Agent Registry?

Here’s the important part.

If AI agents are going to move money, businesses and payment networks need to know which agents they can trust.

That’s why an AI agent registry could become important.

According to Reuters, the registry would initially check AI agents making payments through UPI. It could later expand to cards, bill payments and other payment methods.

The registry could help answer basic questions such as:

Who is this AI agent?

Who authorised it?

What is it allowed to do?

What limits does it have?

This becomes especially important when AI starts making decisions without asking for approval every time.

UPI Could Be the Starting Point

India already has one of the world’s most widely used digital payment systems through UPI.

Agentic payments could add another layer to it.

Instead of manually making every small payment, an AI agent could handle certain transactions based on instructions given by the user.

Early use cases could include groceries and other low-value purchases.

But the possibilities could eventually become much bigger.

Imagine an AI agent watching product prices and automatically buying something when it reaches your preferred price.

Or an agent managing routine business payments based on predefined rules.

That’s where agentic commerce could become interesting.

But There Is a Big Challenge: Trust

Giving AI the ability to make payments also creates new risks.

What if the AI misunderstands your instruction?

What if someone compromises the agent?

What if it makes a payment you didn’t authorise?

And perhaps the biggest question:

Who is responsible when an AI agent gets it wrong?

Reuters reports that questions around liability for incorrect or unauthorised payments still need to be addressed through regulation.

This shows why agentic AI needs more than intelligence.

It needs security, rules and clear limits.

What Does This Mean for Businesses?

Agentic AI is moving beyond chat.

AI agents are increasingly being designed to interact with:

  • Business applications
  • Databases
  • APIs
  • Financial systems
  • Customer platforms
  • Internal workflows

As agents gain more access, businesses need to think carefully about what those agents can see and what actions they can take.

The focus should not only be:

“Can AI do this?”

It should also be:

“Should AI do this, and under what rules?”

The Bigger Picture

India’s planned AI registry is more than a payment story.

It shows how quickly Agentic AI is moving from conversation to action.

The next generation of AI may not simply answer your questions.

It could shop for you, pay bills, monitor prices and complete tasks on your behalf.

But for that future to work, trust has to come first.

The smarter AI agents become, the more important it is to control what they can access and what they can do.
